Bella is a retired racing Greyhound.
She had a winning racing career that lasted several years. She raced
as "Boccabella" in Phoenix, Arizona. Unfortunately she
broke her right front leg in a race, and while she was splinted
and recovering, her trainer passed away. In the following hectic
days, her splint came off and the break was made much worse. Rather
than amputating the leg, it was decided to place a metal plate at
the wrist joint. Now fully recovered, she has no flexibility in
that front wrist and so she usually holds the leg up when walking.
She kind of hops around on her three good legs.
With her high drive, being "handicapped" doesn't slow
her down at all. When she is allowed to run off leash in a fenced
park, she keeps up with the fastest Greyhounds there. When running
she uses all four legs and the first time we took her out we did
a "double-take" to be sure it was our girl running so
fast on four legs!
She has quite a personality, and we are so happy to have added
her to our lives. She was in foster care for almost a year, because
no one wanted to adopt a "damaged" dog. Stupid people...but
great for us, and we have her now.
She was our first Greyhound, but not our last. Check out Kingman's
